MODEL UN PROGRAM TYPES

There are several ways to participate in Model UN simulations. Most groups meet about once a week. At your meetings you should choose which conferences to attend, organize your fundraising efforts, talk about any new information you may have received, prepare for your conference and hold practice simulations.

Model UN Club or Class?
To have a class, your group will require a faculty advisor who has experience with Model UN. In addition, your school's administration must approve the course and curriculum. An advantage to a Model UN class is that your team's efforts are rewarded with credit toward graduation and could possibly be eligible for financial assistance through your college or university.

With a club, your advisor does not need to have prior experiences with Model UN, nor does the school administration need to approve a course or curriculum. Consult your faculty to see which option will work best for your college or university.

Recruiting Participants
To recruit new members you should try posting flyers around your campus, in faculty mailboxes and setting up an information meeting. At the meeting, you might want to show Model UN for Everyone, a video created by UNA-USA's Education Department to introduce people to the Model UN. You might also want to discuss what happens at a Model UN conference and which conferences you might want to attend. Aside from setting up a meeting, you could also ask professors to announce the new club in their classes.

Faculty Advisor
Your faculty advisor takes responsibility for students when the team attends a Model UN conference. Typically the faculty advisor should be fully committed to Model UN, but he or she does not need prior Model UN experience. This person should be able to assist students with research, serve as a coach during the conference and assist with the logistics of attending a conference.
